23 – 31 May 2009 Tallinn Botanic Garden. African Violets and Other Gesnerias exibition . The variety of African violets is incredible. Though they are called African violets they have no relation to the real violets (Viola). There are 2900 species and 139 genuses in the familia of gesnerias (Gesneriaceae). Among them there are trees, bushes, ambrosias lianas and epiphytes. The most common along the African violets are sinningias (Sinningia), codonantheas (Codonanthe), magic flowers (Achimenes), lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus), ape primrose (Streptocarpus), flame violet (Episcia), goldfish plant (Nematanthus) and others. The exhibition is compiled in collaboration with private collectors. Some of the rare sorts, suitable soil and special fertilizers are on sale at weekends. A competition to find the most beautiful African violet will take place on the first day of the exhibition – 23rd of May.
