 Introduction
Hi All! My name is Pat and I'm from England. Sorry, it's the only language I speak. I am a member of The Saintpaulia & Houseplant Society here in UK, AVSA in America, and AVI (online). Although I have about 10 Standard Saintpaulias, I really grow only Semi's, Mini's & Micro's. I only have a few Micro's so far but would like a lot more - you can fit so many more in a small space and they are so cute! I sell a lot of young plants on-line but I prefer to exchange them for new varieties. Thanks to the Internet I have made many friends both here in the UK, in America, Europe and South Africa with whom to exchange young plants & leaves....and general gossip (chat). I'm very excited to have added Lituanika, Kimonson's Bells & Mini Bomb to my collection recently, and would love to have more Eastern European & Russian (small) hybrids. I am getting interested in Microminiature Sinningias and have some on order. For the rest, my children are 23 & 24 years old and live at opposite ends of this country, I have a 11 year old dog - a Hungarian (Magyar) Vizsla and I work in a Garden Centre. Someone recently sent me 8 Petrocosmea rosettifolia leaves but cut the leaf stalks off Any advice on rooting these without them rotting will be very welcome! I have made some false leaf stems on a few but don't know if you should do that with Petrocosmeas. I have only grown P. minor. Thank you for letting me join this group

 Re: Introduction
Hello, Pat! Glad to see you with us. Welcome! My written English is pretty bad, but I can understand all. So I need to ask my husband to check my message. And excuse for my mistakes. I hope all will be understandable. I like standard violets. If you are looking for some interesting Russian mini, pay attention to Balchug Poljot. It's realy nice plant. You can find it in Estonia or in Russia. How big is your collection? Would be nice to see some pictures of them. Soon we will make a topic with links and descriptions to help English visitors to get to know better our forum. In Estonia we have some hybridizing experiments with streps and violets.

 Re: Introduction
Hi It's very nice to meet both of you! Please don't apologise for your English, you both write it very well. I don't know a single word of Russian so you put me to shame. I don't know how many varieties of African Violets I have! I am superstitious about counting them - aren't I silly! It's over 150 but less than 200. I'm not very good with a camera but have tried to add a photo....we'll see if it worked. Uslik - you have a lovely collection of plants, and I haven't tried any hybridising ...yet. It is something I would like to try soon. Maria - that is a gorgeous mini chimera, is it yours? Balchug Poljot...how is that written in Russian, so I'll recognise the name? I have a lot to learn! Including, it seems, how to resize photo's as I've got a message saying to attachment is too big. Hmm

For understand our Russian text Google translator can help you. It working funny but possible understand . I am not sure, but I think Balchuk Poljot is only one russian mini.

Балчуг Полёт (9638)01/27/2006 (И.Милехин) Balchug Poljot (9638) 01/27/2006 (I. Milekhin) I use IrfanView program to do it. http://www.irfanview.com/One more of them (except Balchug Poljot) is Malyshka Rusalka. http://www.senpoliamini.ru/reestr/MalyshkaRusalka01.jpgSelection is very popular now in Russia and Ukraine and a lot of new attractive variety we have, but they are standard saintpaulias. Re: Introduction
Hi I think I've managed to upload my first picture A semiminiature - did I put it in the right place? Last night I wrote a long message then lost it all when I tried to upload never mind though, I managed this time. Those links/photo's are super, it's time I started making a wishlist. Currently I'm collecting (or trying to) the Optimara Little Jewels series of miniatures. And yes, you are right, Google Translator is very handy but does give some funny translations sometimes! I am making use of it though to find my way around the forum....which is excellent. May I congratulate you on it Hoping to load some more photo's soon.

 Re: Introduction
Hi, Pat! My name is Tatjana, I’m Biologist and I work as scientist in the Latvian Research institute in Riga, in Latvia. My hobby is violets, orchids, natural forms of gesneriads and unusual house animals. I’m glad to meet you. I think you have good experience as gesneriads grower and as member of the Saintpaulia Society. Perhaps you’d like to inform us about popular varieties in gesneriads collection in UK. Probably the last new species exhibited on the show in USA is Sinningia unfoliata. Have you (or your colleges) this plant in your collection? Lituanika is old cultivar (the first trailer in former Soviet Union) produced by F. Butene in Vilnius, Lithuania in 80’s and rarely is founded in the collection. The Russian (and Ukrainian) selectionists have produced hundreds of beautiful violet varieties but a standard size (not semi miniature or mini-violets). Some growers grouped the smaller plants with compact rosette in the separate group called as *small standard* (this grouping is not fit the AVSA standard classification). P.S. The trailer *Madame* is very nice violet.

 Re: Introduction
Hi Tatjana It's nice to meet you. We only have Dibley's in this Country who specialise in Gesneriads. They do a lot of lovely hybridising of Streptocarpus. They have added a lot of Saintpaulias this year, and I believe are also increasing Achimenes and Kohlerias. Like yourselves I expect, we have to import from America. The micro Sinningias I am waiting for are all species. As I have limited space here I only grow the smaller varieites (S. shumensis, Chirita tamiana) but make an exception with one or two Kohleria, Petrocosmea & Achimenanthus 'Red Inferno'. Others here grow larger specimens, and are a lot more knowledgable about them than me. I haven't heard of S. unfoliata but will ask about it next week...maybe I should read my AVSA magazine a little better Lituanika may be an old hybrid but it still looks beautiful. Some of my favourites are 'Golden Oldies' - Optimara Little Opal (1988) & Oksana (1996) Pip Squeek (1979) have been in flower all summer. It is interesting you mention the size of Lituanika as some people describe it as a Semiminiature, others as Standard. Small Standard is fine and a nice compromise! Kimonson's Bells (semi) & Mini Bomb(micro) aren't these Russian too? I don't have a hybridisers name for them. Sorry, I have written too much! I'm very intruigued with your 'unusual house animals'. Exotic pets?
